Moon Mahadasha: what the 10-year Chandra period means
By MoonMapped · Checked against how we calculate charts · Updated
Moon Mahadasha, or Chandra Mahadasha, is a 10-year chapter in the Vimshottari dasha system. The Moon stands for the mind and the emotions, so this period is often talked about in terms of feelings, home and inner life. This guide explains what the period is, what the tradition associates with the Moon, what shapes the results, and how long each sub-period lasts, without promising any outcome.
What is Moon Mahadasha?
The Vimshottari system divides life into nine planetary chapters that add up to 120 years. The Moon's chapter is 10 years long. It is the 4th planet in the fixed order of Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury. So it comes after the Sun (Sun Mahadasha) and before Mars (Mars Mahadasha).
Because the Moon is the basis of the whole dasha system, many astrologers give its period extra attention.
Who starts life in Moon Mahadasha?
Your first Mahadasha is set by the nakshatra of your Moon at birth. Each nakshatra is ruled by one of the nine planets. If your Moon was in Rohini, Hasta or Shravana, all ruled by the Moon, you are born into the Moon's chapter.
How much of the 10 years remains at birth depends on how far the Moon had travelled through that nakshatra. Everyone else reaches the Moon later in the sequence. Finding it needs an accurate birth date, time and place. See how to find your nakshatra and your Moon sign.
What the Moon is traditionally associated with
The tradition links the Moon with the mind, emotions, mother, home and nurture. It is also associated with comfort, the public and how at ease a person feels day to day.
Because the Moon changes quickly, its period is often described as emotionally rich and changeable. Many astrologers say it brings feelings and family matters to the front. That is a tendency, not a rule.
- Mind, moods and emotional life
- Mother, family and home
- Nurture, care and comfort
- The public and how people connect with you
- Rest, sleep and a sense of belonging

What shapes how the Moon's period plays out
The Moon is the same planet for everyone, but the chart around it is not. The tradition looks at several factors together.
- House: The house the Moon occupies in your chart points to the area of life that gets the most attention, such as home, work or relationships.
- Sign and dignity: The Moon is considered exalted in Taurus and debilitated in Scorpio. It is in its own sign in Cancer. A planet in a strong sign is classically read as more comfortable.
- Phase: A fuller Moon is traditionally read as stronger than a very thin one, so the lunar phase at birth is also considered.
- Houses it rules: For each ascendant, the Moon rules a different house. Which one it rules for your lagna sets the practical subject it brings forward.
- Conjunctions and aspects: The planets sharing its sign or house, and those looking at it, also colour the result.
Antardashas inside Moon Mahadasha
Inside the 10 years there are nine sub-periods. Each one starts with the Moon itself and then follows the Vimshottari order. The length of each is 10 × (planet's years) / 120 years. Since the Moon's chapter is 10 years, that works out to exactly the planet's years in months. The lengths are shown below, and they add up to exactly 10 years, or 120 months.
For example, Moon/Moon is 10 × 10 / 120 = 0.833 years, which is 10 months. Moon/Venus is 10 × 20 / 120 = 1.667 years, which is 20 months, or 1 year 8 months.

A practical way to think about it
A calm reading is that the Moon's period tends to ask for emotional awareness. People often find it useful to pay attention to sleep, rest and routine, keep close ties with family and friends, and make a home that feels settled.
None of this is a prediction. A dasha is a lens for reflection, and it works best next to practical decisions, not instead of them. For real health, legal or financial concerns, talk to a qualified professional.
